Actor Ranveer Singh, who made his Bollywood debut with ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ in 2010, has been entertaining the audience from his stellar performances from his very first film. Not only that but the actor has always taken up challenging roles and always managed to excel on the silver screen.

With several blockbusters under his belt already, Ranveer is touted to be the next big thing in the industry and going by his ever-growing fanbase and box office success, he looks to be unstoppable. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, senior film trade analysts Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta spoke about Ranveer’s decade long career and even shared their views on how far the actor will go in the long run.

Excerpts from the conversation…

Ranveer has always experimented with his on-screen characters? How well has it worked for him?

Taran Adarsh: I think the generation today is very smart, they don’t want to star in the same conventional love stories and Ranveer began his career itself with a film like ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ which was a huge hit. His performance in it as a first-timer was very confident that had caught everyone’s attention. Back then he had his share of good and bad films but if you look at his career graph, then his choices of films have really been a big plus. But the turning point in his career came when he teamed up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Starting with ‘Ram-Leela’, then ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Padmaavat’, these films put him right at the top and cemented his position as a very practical actor, who could deliver the numbers.

Komal Nahta: Fabulously well. Whether it’s ‘Simmba’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’ or his debut film ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, every film of Ranveer has worked well for him. He has selected a good mix of films.

What’s been the secret behind Ranveer’s success?

Taran Adarsh: His choice of films and also the kind of filmmakers he has worked with. With Bhansali, one knows that you’ll be credited in a larger than life form and on the other hand, with Zoya Akhtar, you know that it’s not going to be the usual commercial cinema. But what helped him win over the classes and masses is ‘Simmba’ which was right on the bull’s eye. I would give the credit to Rohit Shetty as well, as their combination worked like magic and ‘Simmba’ turned out to be a massive hit.

Komal Nahta: First and foremost his talent and versatility. Ranveer is supremely talented, very versatile: whether its action, dance, emotions and dancing, he’s like a complete package.

Which ones have been his most remarkable performances?

Taran Adarsh: ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ was the turning point in his career as he delivered a fine energetic performance. Then ‘Gunday’ was also a good entertainer. ‘Bajirao Mastani’ which had a clash with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale’ at the box office, gave a solid fight and emerged victoriously.

If you see there are two directors, who brought out the real talent of Ranveer: Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Zoya Akhtar. And when you talk about Bhansali’s film ‘Padmaavat’, Ranveer as managed to deliver a knockout performance in a negative role as well. Secondly, Zoya Akhtar and Ranveer have done two films. Ranveer was very good in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and in ‘Gully Boy’ he looked so raw in the de-glam look, delivering another fine and powerful performance.

Komal Nahta: Apart from the ones mentioned earlier; ‘Simmba’, ‘Lootera’ and ‘Gully Boy.

Do you think his upcoming projects (83, Cirkus, Jayeshbhai Jordaar) have the calibre to excel at the box office?

Taran Adarsh: Yes, why not. Am supremely confident about ’83’. ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’ will be a surprise and ‘Cirkus’ will again be a hit film given the fact that Ranveer-Rohit’s ‘Simmba’ was a huge hit.

Komal Nahta: ’83’ will be a super-duper film. The footage which was shown at the film’s launch was to be released in the cinema halls then it would itself have crossed Rs 100 crore. So you can imagine how big the film would be.

Talking about ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’, it’s going to be a huge surprise package. It’s going to blow everybody’s mind off and go on to the victory post in a big-big way. And talking about ‘Cirkus’, we have seen him team up with Rohit Shetty earlier so we don’t need to say anything more.

Where do you see him in the next 10 years?

Taran Adarsh: Right at the top. If he continues in the same way and makes the right choices, then there’s no one stopping him. He’s a star performer and a brilliant actor and therefore I won’t like to compare him with anyone else as he’s got his own individual style.

Komal Nahta: He’s a superstar in the making, undoubtedly.
