Irrfan Khan has left a void in the Indian cinema that cannot be filled. However, the actor will continue to live on with some unique characters that he has immortalized in his career spanning over three decades. And one such character is undoubtedly that of ‘Saajan Fernandes’ from Ritesh Batra’s ‘The Lunchbox’.
Opening up exclusively to ETimes about the late legendary actor, producer Guneet Monga of ‘The Lunchbox’ said, ‘My first ever official trip to Bombay was in 2005 to get Irrfan’s signature for a Canadian visa document for a movie called ‘Partition’ I met him at the parking lot of the Mumbai airport between flights. From then to making ‘The Lunchbox’ together, he has been a dream to work with. He always took chances and encouraged new voices. He loved stories and gave them his all, from ‘Salaam Bombay’ to ‘Maqbool’ to ‘Life of Pi’ to ‘Jurassic Park’.

Elaborating further, she added, “He is our true global star. He is cherished around the world as one of the best actors ever. There is no one like Irrfan. The magic of his eyes and that smile will live on for generations to come. He has truly set the bar very high.”

“I am deeply saddened by the news and don’t know how to process it. It was a privilege to see him bring so many unforgettable characters to life. I am glad I could witness his charm and unmatched wit, one last time on big screen with ‘Angrezi Medium’. He is a legend and his legacy will be forever. He and his family will always be in my prayers. Thank you for all the magic”, she concluded.

Irrfan Khan passed away on April 29, 2020 after a prolonged battle with a rare type of cancer. The actor had been admitted in Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital for a colon infection, three days after his mother passed away in Jaipur.
