According to reports, the film is now the global top-grossing Hollywood movie amidst the pandemic.
The film that is in its third weekend of release, added another $7.7 million, boosting its North American tally to $80.5 million. The film is touted to be the first to cross $100 million in the U.S and Canada since the pandemic began. Its ticket sales are especially notable, and not just because movie theatres across the country have been operating at reduced capacity.
Besides drawing in a large theatre audience, ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is also available on OTT platforms for streaming. The movie that was on a roll in Indian markets as well, earning an estimated Rs 50 crore, made its way past the $390 million mark globally.
These impressive collections have beaten out the likes of Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Tenet’ that earned a global collection of $365 million.
It also brought in $7.7 million in the United States, reaching $80.5 million in its third week domestically. Overseas, it brought in $12.2 million for a total of $309.7 million and $390.2 million worldwide.
Godzilla vs. Kong beat out Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which earned $58.4 million, and was the previous highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.
The film sees mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The initial confrontation between the two Titans – instigated by unseen forces – is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.
